Escher’s Log Cabin
by Denise von Minden
62” X 75”
For this quilt, I wanted to work with both a traditional and wonky log cabin block. I wanted there to be a sense of disruption and chaos, but also a visible pattern of sameness. This is often how I feel my own house is with the chaos of childrearing, working, and maintaining my own interests/self. As I played with the varying shades of the same color family, the blocks reminded me of the work of M.C. Escher and other graphic artists that experiment with perspective, symmetry, and tessellations. The inclusion of the red adds a playful and unexpected element. As a whole, the quilt is a perfect example of the “wonky log cabin” that I call my own.
